Introduction
The rise of remote work has transformed how people live, travel, and connect. Digital nomads—professionals who work remotely while moving between locations—often occupy spaces designed for short-term tourism rather than long-term belonging. This results in isolated living, fragmented communities, and limited integration with local culture.
The Digital Nomad Village competition invites architects, urban designers, and planners to rethink how temporary living environments can evolve into vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable communities. Participants are challenged to design a village that supports work, living, social interaction, and cultural exchange—bridging the gap between transient stay and meaningful community life.
Objective
The primary objective of this competition is to explore architectural and spatial strategies that transform temporary digital nomad settlements into socially connected, economically viable, and environmentally responsible communities.
Design proposals should:
Foster interaction and collaboration among residents
Balance privacy with shared living and working environments
Integrate local culture, ecology, and economy
Address long-term adaptability and sustainability
Redefine community beyond short-term occupancy
The Building Program
Participants are free to interpret and innovate, but the proposal should include the following core components:
Residential Units
Short-term and mid-term accommodation
Flexible housing typologies (shared, private, modular)
Workspaces
Co-working areas
Meeting rooms and quiet work zones
Outdoor working spaces
Community & Social Spaces
Common kitchens and dining areas
Community halls, lounges, and event spaces
Informal gathering areas
Wellness & Recreation
Fitness or yoga spaces
Outdoor recreation areas
Nature-based wellness zones
Support & Services
Cafés or small retail spaces
Laundry and essential services
Administration and information center
Public Interface
Spaces encouraging interaction with local residents
Cultural exchange or learning spaces
Site
The site is open and must be selected by participants.
It may be located in any geographical context (coastal, rural, urban edge, island, mountain, etc.).
The chosen site should meaningfully support the concept of remote work, lifestyle mobility, and community building
Participants must clearly justify their site selection in relation to climate, culture, connectivity, and local context.
