Introduction

As the global population grows and climate challenges intensify, the way we produce, distribute, and consume food must radically evolve. Architecture has a critical role to play in shaping resilient, efficient, and ethical food systems. The Future Food Lab competition invites participants to envision an architectural hub that integrates food research, production, education, and public engagement—redefining how communities interact with food in the future.

This competition encourages forward-thinking ideas that merge technology, sustainability, and social responsibility to create spaces that support future food ecosystems.

Objective

The primary objective of the competition is to design a Future Food Lab that explores innovative methods of food cultivation, processing, research, and consumption. Participants are challenged to propose architectural solutions that address food security, climate resilience, urban agriculture, waste reduction, and community awareness through design.

Designs should demonstrate how architecture can actively participate in the future of food rather than merely housing it.

The Building Program

Participants may interpret the program flexibly, but the proposal should consider incorporating the following functions:

  • Food research and innovation labs

  • Experimental farming areas (vertical farming, hydroponics, aquaponics, algae labs, etc.)

  • Test kitchens and food development studios

  • Food processing and storage spaces

  • Educational and exhibition zones

  • Community dining or tasting spaces

  • Public interaction areas (markets, workshops, learning zones)

  • Administrative and support spaces

  • Waste management and circular systems (composting, recycling, energy recovery)

The scale and spatial relationships are left to the designer’s discretion.

Site

Participants may choose any urban, peri-urban, or rural context that strengthens their concept. Site selection should be justified through climate conditions, accessibility, food systems relevance, and social impact.
