Introduction

The global healthcare landscape is increasingly challenged by pandemics, natural disasters, and urban population pressures. Rapidly deployable, adaptable healthcare units are crucial to ensure timely medical response and continuous care. This competition seeks innovative designs for modular healthcare units that can be easily transported, quickly assembled, and efficiently scaled according to demand, while providing high-quality patient care in diverse environments.

Objective

• Design flexible, modular healthcare spaces that prioritize speed, functionality, and patient comfort.

• Explore sustainable construction methods, adaptable layouts, and efficient use of materials.

• Address the needs of temporary or emergency medical facilities without compromising healthcare standards.

• Encourage innovation in integrating medical technology, sanitation, and energy efficiency in compact healthcare units.

The Building Program

Participants are expected to develop a modular healthcare unit with the following considerations:

• Capacity: 10–50 patients per module (expandable through multiple units).

• Functional Spaces:

  • Patient wards (single, double, or multiple occupancy)

  • Consultation and treatment rooms

  • Isolation/quarantine zones

  • Administrative and staff areas

  • Sanitation and hygiene facilities

  • Storage and support spaces for medical equipment

• Flexibility: Units should allow reconfiguration for different healthcare scenarios.

• Sustainability: Consider low-energy systems, renewable energy integration, and sustainable materials.

• Transport & Assembly: Easily transportable, quick assembly/disassembly, and modular scalability.

Site

Participants may select a site of their choice, considering:

• Urban or rural context

• Accessibility and transportation constraints

• Environmental and climatic conditions

The site selection should align with rapid deployment scenarios and justify the design approach.
