Introduction

Rural settlements across the world are at a pivotal moment—balancing traditional lifestyles with the demands of modernization, connectivity, and climate resilience. The Smart Village Hub competition invites architects, planners, designers, and thinkers to envision a contemporary rural hub that integrates smart infrastructure, digital access, sustainable livelihoods, and community-driven spaces.

The hub should act as a catalyst for social, economic, and technological empowerment, ensuring that rural communities are not left behind in the global transition toward smart and sustainable living.

Objective

The objective of this competition is to design a Smart Village Hub that supports education, healthcare, skill development, governance, commerce, and social interaction while respecting rural identity, culture, and landscape.

Participants are encouraged to propose innovative yet context-sensitive solutions that leverage technology to enhance quality of life without compromising environmental balance or community values.

The Building Program

The Smart Village Hub may include (but is not limited to):

• Digital Learning & Skill Development Center

• Telemedicine / Primary Healthcare Unit

• Co-working & Entrepreneurship Spaces

• Local Governance & Community Administration

• Market Space for Local Produce & Crafts

• Multipurpose Community Hall

• Information & Connectivity Hub (Wi-Fi, digital kiosks)

• Renewable Energy & Water Management Systems

• Public Courtyards, Shaded Plazas & Social Spaces

Participants may add or adapt functions based on their conceptual approach.

Site

• Participants are free to select a hypothetical or real rural site anywhere in the world.

• The proposal should clearly justify site selection, climate response, local materials, and socio-cultural context.

• Site area is flexible, but designs should remain realistic and scalable for rural implementation.
