Introduction
Rapid urbanization, rising housing costs, and changing lifestyles have transformed the way people live in cities. Traditional housing models often prioritize privacy and efficiency but neglect social interaction, community well-being, and shared living experiences. Urban Co-Living Housing explores a new housing paradigm where architecture fosters connection, inclusivity, and collective living without compromising personal space.
This competition invites participants to design an innovative urban co-living housing model that balances individual living units with vibrant shared spaces, encouraging social interaction, collaboration, and a sense of belonging within dense urban environments.
Objective
The objective of this competition is to rethink urban housing as a social ecosystem rather than a collection of isolated units. Participants are encouraged to propose adaptable, inclusive, and sustainable co-living solutions that respond to contemporary urban lifestyles, diverse user groups, and evolving work-life patterns.
Designs should demonstrate how architecture can strengthen community bonds, improve quality of life, and optimize land use while remaining economically and environmentally responsible.
The Building Program
Participants may define the scale of the project but should include the following components:
Private residential units (studio / shared / modular units)
Shared kitchens and dining spaces
Common living and social lounges
Co-working or study areas
Recreational and wellness spaces
Semi-public interaction zones (courtyards, terraces, corridors, atriums)
Service spaces (laundry, storage, waste management)
Circulation and accessibility elements
Flexibility, adaptability, and phased growth are encouraged.
Site
The site may be selected by the participant
Must be located in an urban or peri-urban context
Participants should clearly define:
City and country
Site area
Urban surroundings and constraints
The proposal should respond meaningfully to its chosen context, climate, and social fabric
