Introduction

Urban forests are vital green lungs within cities, offering ecological benefits, improving air quality, and providing spaces for recreation and reflection. The Urban Forest Pavilion competition invites designers, architects, and students to envision innovative interventions that encourage pause, offer shade, and create shelter in urban forest settings. Participants are challenged to design structures that harmonize with the forest environment while enhancing the visitor experience.

Objective

• To create thoughtful architectural interventions that promote rest, contemplation, and interaction within urban forests.

• To explore innovative uses of materials, sustainable design, and ecological sensitivity in forested urban landscapes.

• To enhance accessibility, comfort, and engagement for diverse visitors while minimizing environmental impact.

The Building Program

Design proposals may include, but are not limited to:

• Pavilions, shelters, or rest areas integrated into the forest environment

• Seating, platforms, or walkways for observation and leisure

• Shade structures utilizing natural or lightweight materials

• Multi-functional spaces for gatherings, workshops, or meditation

• Emphasis on ecological sustainability, durability, and minimal disturbance to natural surroundings

Site

• Participants are free to select an urban forest site of their choice.

• Designs must respond to the chosen site’s topography, existing vegetation, and environmental conditions.

• Submissions should clearly indicate site context, either through photographs, maps, or diagrams.
