SYMBIOCENE

Editorial reflection

Humanity stands at a defining ecological crossroads. As biodiversity declines under the pressures of urbanization, climate change, and habitat fragmentation, the built environment is often seen as part of the problem. SYMBIOCENE challenged that perception, inviting architects and designers to reimagine architecture not as an ecological burden, but as a living framework capable of regeneration. The competition called for visionary proposals where buildings and ecosystems are inseparable—where multispecies coexistence shapes the future of design.
The submissions reveal a powerful shift from anthropocentric thinking toward a symbiocentric worldview. Participants envisioned vertical wildernesses, rewilded ruins, floating biomes, desert blooms, sky gardens, and subterranean sanctuaries—each proposing architecture that integrates natural cycles, supports biodiversity, and functions as an adaptive, living system. These projects expand the language of architecture beyond shelter and structure, positioning it as an active participant in ecological restoration.
As we announce the results, we celebrate not only innovation and creativity, but a collective rethinking of our relationship with the planet. SYMBIOCENE demonstrates that the future of architecture lies in reciprocity, resilience, and regeneration—where the built environment evolves as an ecosystem, and biodiversity thrives alongside human life.
