SCHOOLS AS ANCHORS OF COMMUNITY
Editorial reflection
The “Schools as Anchors of Society” design competition invited participants to rethink the role of schools in an increasingly complex and evolving urban context. Moving beyond their traditional function, schools were envisioned as dynamic community hubs—spaces that foster connection, inclusivity, and shared experiences.
The submissions reflect a compelling shift in perspective, where education is seamlessly integrated with cultural, social, and recreational life. Through adaptable, sustainable, and community-focused design strategies, participants demonstrated how schools can become vibrant centers that serve diverse user groups throughout the day and year.
What stands out across the entries is a strong commitment to strengthening social cohesion and creating spaces that nurture belonging. These proposals highlight the immense potential of schools to act as anchors within their communities—bridging gaps, encouraging interaction, and enhancing collective well-being.
We commend all participants for their thoughtful and inspiring contributions, and celebrate these ideas as a step toward more connected and resilient communities.

Juror’s Comment:
A beautifully articulated and immersive proposal that uses water as both a spatial and pedagogical element. The integration of history, environment, and community is exceptional, creating a strong identity and a memorable learning experience rooted in context.
Work on:
The concept is powerful, the design could further clarify functional zoning and circulation efficiency, particularly in relation to water elements, to ensure ease of use and maintenance in everyday operation.

Remarkable
Villa Zavaleta - Public School N°30
Miranda Young, Julieta castiglione & Matias lorenzo
Juror’s Comment:
A strong and well-resolved proposal that clearly positions the school as a social catalyst. The modular strategy with a central flexible core is particularly effective in enabling community engagement, and the project demonstrates a deep understanding of its urban and social context.
Work on:
The design could explore spatial richness and architectural expression, especially in the community core, to create more distinct and memorable experiential qualities rather than relying primarily on a rational modular system.
