Josefina Cotella

Design Title

Ruinas

Josefina Cotella is an architect from Tucumán, Argentina, whose final degree project work explores the relationship between architecture, landscape, memory, and heritage. Her projects are driven by an interest in ruins as living palimpsests; spaces where history, time, and territory coexist through layered narratives. Her design perspective is strongly influenced by the landscapes and historical layers of northern Argentina, with a particular interest in ruins, materiality, and the dialogue between built form and terrain.
The featured project, developed at the Ruinas Jesuíticas de San José de Lules, proposes an underground museum that preserves and reveals the historic site through an immersive architectural approach. By working beneath the terrain rather than imposing on it, the project explores architecture as a way of uncovering hidden narratives through space, light, and movement. Controlled darkness contrasts with natural light entering from the landscape edges and unexpected openings above, creating an atmosphere of discovery, contemplation, and connection with the ruins.
Josefina continues to develop her architectural practice through projects that explore atmosphere, memory, and materiality, with the intention of creating spaces that are both emotionally resonant and deeply connected to their context.
