HABITAT BEYOND EARTH

Editorial reflection

The “Habitat Beyond Earth – The Mars Colony Dreamscape Challenge” invited participants to step beyond the familiar boundaries of our planet and envision a future where human life extends to Mars. In doing so, this competition became more than an exploration of architecture—it became a reflection on adaptability, resilience, and the evolving relationship between humanity and its environment. The submissions received demonstrate a compelling shift from speculative imagination to thoughtful, research-driven proposals grounded in possibility.
Participants responded to the challenge with remarkable ingenuity, addressing the harsh realities of the Martian landscape while crafting habitats that prioritize sustainability, efficiency, and human well-being. From innovative resource management systems to psychologically responsive spatial designs, the entries reveal a deep understanding that building on Mars is not only about survival, but about creating meaningful, livable environments that nurture community and belonging.
As we announce the results, we celebrate not only the winning proposals but also the collective vision put forth by all participants. Their work contributes to a growing dialogue about life beyond Earth—one that merges technology with humanity, and ambition with responsibility. These ideas bring us closer to reimagining the future of habitation, reminding us that even in the most distant landscapes, design has the power to shape hope, identity, and continuity.

01  First Place

Winner

Settle/Move: Mars

Kim Nuri, Kim Chan Hee & Kang Seongeun

Juror’s Comment:
A highly visionary and intelligently resolved proposal that seamlessly integrates mobility, underground habitation, and biomimicry into a resilient Martian settlement system.

Work on:
The complexity of the system could benefit from clearer hierarchy and spatial legibility, particularly in communicating how users navigate and experience the environment.

02  Second Place

Remarkable

Ares Base I

Mohamed Mohamed safy, Mohamed eslam Attiya, mohamed sayed & abd el rahman hemdan

Juror’s Comment:
A beautifully resolved and deeply human-centered proposal that transforms survival architecture into a meaningful, livable Martian environment.

Work on:
The project could further explore mobility, adaptability, or expansion beyond the central typology to match its otherwise strong systemic thinking.

From The Earth

Polatip Thongphruksalai

Juror’s Comment:
A highly rigorous and visionary proposal that successfully bridges speculative design with a credible, phased roadmap for real Martian habitation.

Work on:
The architectural expression and spatial identity could be further developed to match the strength of its technical and strategic framework.

Honourable Mention

Hexa City

Muhsin Musthafa

Juror’s Comment:
A highly sophisticated and scalable urban system that successfully integrates modular design, human-centered living, and technological feasibility.

Work on:
The proposal could further strengthen its site-specific environmental response and landscape integration, as the current scheme feels more universal than Mars-specific.

Honourable Mention

Hex Valley

Lee Minhyok

Juror’s Comment:
A well-grounded and contextually responsive proposal that intelligently uses Martian topography to enhance resilience and efficiency.

Work on:
The proposal could further develop human experience, spatial diversity, and community life, which currently feel secondary to environmental and structural strategies.
